Why Source Handicrafts from Nepal?

Nepal is one of the world's richest sources of authentic handmade products, with centuries-old craft traditions and a thriving artisan community.

Fair Trade Practices

Our artisan partners receive fair wages that support their families and communities. Many workshops are run by women's cooperatives, providing economic independence and empowerment in rural Nepal. Every purchase supports sustainable livelihoods.

Unique Craftsmanship

Nepali handicrafts are made using techniques that cannot be replicated by machines — hand-hammered singing bowls, mineral-pigment thangka paintings, lost-wax cast bronze statues. Each piece is genuinely unique, with the subtle variations that prove authentic handwork.

Competitive Pricing

Direct sourcing from Kathmandu workshops eliminates multiple layers of middlemen. Combined with Nepal's competitive labor costs and trade preference programs (duty-free access to EU, US GSP), you get exceptional handmade products at prices that allow healthy retail margins.

Centuries-Old Traditions

Nepal's craft traditions span millennia — Patan's metalworkers have been casting bronze since the 3rd century, pashmina weaving dates to the 15th century, and Lokta papermaking has been documented for over 1,000 years. When you source from Nepal, you are connecting your customers to living history.

“I use Lokta paper extensively in my bookbinding and paper art practice. The fiber structure is extraordinary — strong yet flexible, with a natural texture that no machine can replicate. Nepal Lokta Paper supplies me with bulk sheets in various weights and colors. The consistency has improved remarkably since they standardized their grading system. My favorite is the 80 GSM natural cream — perfect for fine press bookbinding.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lokta paper made from?
Lokta paper is made from the inner bark of the Daphne bush (Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea), which grows wild at 5,000-10,000 feet altitude in Nepal's hill districts, primarily Baglung and Myagdi. The bark is soaked, boiled with wood ash, pounded into pulp, spread on frames, and sun-dried — a completely natural process using no chemicals or synthetic additives.
Is Lokta paper production sustainable?
Yes, Lokta is one of the world's most sustainable paper sources. The Daphne bush regenerates from its root system within 5-7 years after bark harvesting — the plant is not killed, only the bark is stripped. This makes it a truly renewable resource. The entire production process uses only water, wood ash (natural alkali), and sunlight. No chemicals, no machines, no electricity. UNESCO has recognized Lokta papermaking as an important traditional craft.
What makes Lokta paper naturally pest-resistant?
Daphne bark contains natural compounds (including daphnin and other coumarins) that are toxic to insects. This gives Lokta paper a natural resistance to bookworms, silverfish, and other paper-destroying pests — without any chemical treatment. This is why Nepal's national archives contain Lokta paper documents that remain intact after 1,000+ years.
What is the minimum order quantity?
MOQs vary by product: bulk paper sheets start at 500 sheets per color/weight, journals and notebooks at 100 pieces per design, gift wrap at 200 sheets, lampshades at 50 pieces, and greeting cards at 100 per design. For first-time buyers, we offer sample packs at retail pricing so you can assess quality before committing.
What paper weights (GSM) are available?
We produce Lokta paper from 20 GSM (ultra-thin tissue for lampshades) to 150 GSM (heavy cardstock). Standard weights are: 30 GSM (tissue/lampshade), 50 GSM (gift wrap/art), 60 GSM (stationery/journal pages), 80 GSM (covers/cards), 120+ GSM (cardstock/boxes). Custom weights are available on request.
