Lokta Paper Journals & Notebooks

Handbound Journals with Naturally Durable Lokta Paper Pages

Lokta paper journals are among Nepal's most beloved handicraft exports. Made from the inner bark of the Daphne bush (Daphne bholua and Daphne papyracea), which grows wild at 5,000-10,000 feet altitude in Nepal's hill districts, Lokta paper is naturally pest-resistant, acid-free, and extraordinarily durable — documents written on Lokta paper have survived over 1,000 years in Nepal's national archives. Our journals are handbound by skilled bookbinders in Kathmandu using Lokta paper pages and covers, with cotton or hemp thread stitching. Each journal has a unique texture and character that no machine-made paper can replicate.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Lokta paper production begins in remote hill villages. Daphne bush bark is sustainably harvested — the plant regenerates from the root within 5-7 years, making it a truly renewable resource. The bark is soaked in water and pounded into pulp using wooden mallets. The pulp is mixed with water and spread onto wooden frames covered with muslin cloth, then sun-dried for 4-8 hours. The dried sheets are transported to Kathmandu where bookbinders cut, fold, and assemble them into journals. Covers are wrapped in decorative Lokta paper (block-printed, dyed, or embossed), pages are collated and sewn with cotton or hemp thread, and finishing touches (corner protectors, closures, bookmarks) are added by hand.

Lokta Paper Journals & Notebooks — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lokta paper suitable for fountain pen writing?
Lokta paper handles fountain pen ink well — the natural fibers absorb ink without excessive bleeding or feathering. However, very wet nibs or heavily saturated inks may show slight feathering on thinner Lokta sheets. For fountain pen users, we recommend our heavier-weight Lokta paper (60-80 GSM). We can produce journal pages specifically optimized for fountain pen use.
How durable is Lokta paper compared to regular paper?
Lokta paper is remarkably durable. It is naturally acid-free (unlike wood-pulp paper which yellows and deteriorates), resistant to insects and mildew (the Daphne bark contains natural pest-repellent compounds), and extremely tear-resistant due to its long fiber structure. Government documents in Nepal have been written on Lokta paper for over 1,000 years and remain legible today.
